22 Chaitra, Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, has said time has come to focus on quality rather than quantity of films.
At a programme organized by the Film Producers’ Association here Wednesday, Minister Sharma, who is also the spokesperson of the government, viewed quality film production is essential because it is time to compete with international film industry. Modern technology should be used in films from shooting to screening, she added.
She urged the cine artists to make internationally competitive films, for which government would extend support from its side with formulation of necessary laws and policy. Minister Sharma also informed that Film Development Board was active as a government body for the policy level issues of film. She also urged all concerned to solve film-related problems via the Board.
According to her, the Cinema Act, 2026 was being revised to suit present digital age. The present act prepared for the age of black and white reel does not suffice to address present issues, she argued. Draft of the amendment was being prepared and it would be finalized by the ministry as soon as possible, she made commitment.
“Film is not only a medium of entertainment but also medium to disseminate social message. So, fine balance of message, art and content is essential,” Minister Sharma argued, adding that it could also be developed as a medium of political and social change.
The Minister was also for the depiction of natural beauty and cultural diversity of the country in film, which could be helpful to compete in the international film events. The programme was presided over by Chairperson of Film Producers’ Association Nabal Khadka.
