It is challenging to retain health related human resources: Health Minister Paudel

6 May, Kathmandu : Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Paudel, has said though there is no crisis of health related human resources, it was challenging to retain them.

At a programme organized here today on the occasion of 23rd Establishment Day of National Academy of Medical Sciences here today, Minister Paudel there is enough number of human resources in health institutions of Kathmandu Valley, but there is crisis in health institutions out of the Valley. He expressed the view that it was necessary to provide incentive and discount to make health related human resources stay in the country through the investment of the state as increasing the number of health related human resources is the need of the country.

The Health Minister shared, “The Academy has produced many human resources and health services. It will stand as the institute producing the highest number of human resources in health sector in the country within few years.” Similarly, member of the National Planning Commission, Prof Dr RP Bichha, said the policies and programmes presented by the government for coming fiscal year has incorporated the issues from restructuring health insurance to guaranteeing health treatment of children and senior citizens. “The Academy is running more than 100 programmes in various health related fields. Human resources produced from the Academy are in every corners of the country”, he mentioned. Likewise, Vice-Chancellor of the Academy, Prof Dr Bhupendra Basnet, added that the Academy has significant contribution in research of medical education and quality of health sector. “We have increased 128 seats of MD, BDS and MSC to 250 this year.

The Academy has forwarded research and collaboration with specialized institution of health sector in the world”, opined Basnet. The Academy was established in 2059 BS and it is running at the foundation of Bir Hospital established 135 years before. Rector of the Academy, Prof Dr Lochan Karki, shared that 24 hospitals are associated under the Academy and different fellowship programmes are running at 12 different hospitals. Similarly, Bir Hospital Director Prof Dr Dillip Sharma mentioned that the Hospital has been providing services through 966 beds including 72-bed ICU.

On the occasion, senior specialist doctor Prof Dr Sudeep Kumar Bhattacharya was honoured as well as Dr Nisha Khanal, Dr Mandesh Shrestha and Dr Shiva Bhandari were honoured for securing highest marks in different categories of Master’s degree programme. Likewise, Prof Dr Ram Hari Chapagain and Dr Binita Adhikari were honoured with cash and certificate for achieving excellence in research.
