UML a defining party based on people’s multi-party democracy: General Secretary Pokharel

17 May, Kirtipur: General Secretary of CPN UML, Shankar Pokharel, has argued that UML became a defining political power based on the people’s multi-party democracy.

General Secretary Pokharel said it while addressing a function organized at party headquarters on the occasion of Madan-Ashrit Memorial Day today. The PMD was developed under the leadership of then General Secretary Madan Bhandari. It was foundation of PMD that led the party to become a strong political power in the general election held in 2051BS.

“Since then UML is a playing a key role in national politics. PMD’s contribution helped defeat the reactionary and violent policies and autocratic monarchy,” he reminded. The UML has been moving head with the chequered history of challenges including a ban on party, party split in 2054BS, disappointing result in constituent assembly and later revival, according to him.

Then General Secretary of party, Bhandari and then chief of UML organization department, Jivraj Ashrit, had lost lives at Dashdhunga jeep accident occurred on Jestha 3, 2050BS. They were heading to Chitwan from Pokhara.
